Laine

Laine can be an English-language spelling of Lane, a surname and word for a narrow road or path. In that use it belongs with Lane rather than requiring a longer name such as Elaine. Similar spellings can develop through different family nicknames, so an individual person's longer name may explain a separate route.

Laine also occurs in Baltic-language naming, where its sound and word associations differ from the English one-syllable form. Those uses should not be merged into a universal translation. For an English-speaking shortlist, Lane is the clearest comparison and Laine adds an i without necessarily changing the intended sound. Asking how a family says the name is more reliable than assuming every Laine shares one pronunciation.
