Larson

Larson is a Scandinavian surname meaning son of Lars. Lars is a form of Lawrence, which ultimately comes from the Latin name for someone from Laurentum. The most direct meaning of Larson is therefore the parent-child relationship expressed by the surname, rather than a literal crown of laurel.

The related spellings Larsson and Larsen reflect different surname conventions and family histories. When Larson is chosen as a first name, it can preserve an ancestral surname or honor a Lars without repeating the same given name. Its Nordic background comes from this patronymic tradition, while later use as a first name carries the inherited family form into a different position.
