Leonard

Leonard comes from Germanic naming elements associated with a lion and bravery or strength. The name has a long history among saints and in European personal naming. Composer Leonard Bernstein and singer-poet Leonard Cohen are familiar bearers who give it distinct musical associations without changing its older meaning.

Len and Lenny are established short forms. Leonardo offers an Italian counterpart, while Leonhard makes the Germanic spelling more visible. English Leonard often sounds different from the standalone name Leo, despite sharing letters. Comparing the full form with its likely nickname can help a family preserve an inherited Leonard while choosing how it will be used every day.
