Liv

Liv is an established Scandinavian name connected with Old Norse Hlíf, meaning “protection.” It is also associated with the modern Scandinavian word for life. Separately, English-speaking families may use Liv as a short form of Olivia. These routes can explain the same short spelling without making protection, life, and olive tree interchangeable translations.

Liv offers an especially concise three-letter form, but pronunciation can differ between the Scandinavian name and an English Olivia nickname. Families can decide which tradition they intend before choosing how to introduce it. Olivia provides a longer option if that is the desired connection, while Liv can stand independently with its own Scandinavian history.
