Lynn

Lynn has a surname and place-name history connected with Welsh llyn, meaning “lake.” It later became a given name for boys and girls, giving it a longstanding unisex background. A separate route treats Lynn as a short form of Linda or of longer names ending in a similar sound, so a particular family’s use may have a different immediate starting point.

The lake connection makes Lynn a quiet nature name: it looks like a conventional personal name while carrying a landscape word behind it. Its use as a middle name and as an ending in compound names has also made the sound familiar across generations. Lyn and Lynne offer closely related spellings. Parents reviving Lynn can preserve an ancestor’s exact form while choosing whether its landscape history or family connection is the central story.
