Macsen

Macsen is the Welsh form of Maximus, a Latin name meaning “greatest.” Its distinctive history centers on Magnus Maximus, a fourth-century Roman ruler remembered in Wales as Macsen Wledig. The Welsh form belongs to a long historical and literary tradition rather than being a recent spelling invented from Max.

Macsen appears in the medieval tale The Dream of Macsen, where the Roman emperor dreams of a woman and a distant land before seeking them out. Welsh tradition also connected him with the beginnings of royal lineages. These stories give the name a particular place in Welsh cultural memory. Maxen is another Welsh spelling, while Mac can serve as a shorter form; neither removes the connection with the older Latin name.
