Madalyn

Madalyn is a spelling variation in the Madeleine and Madeline family. These forms ultimately come from Magdalene, the description identifying a woman from Magdala. The connection is therefore geographical and historical, rather than a separate ancient meaning created by the lyn ending.

Maddie and Maddy are familiar everyday options, while Madalyn can also be used in full. Its spelling usually suggests a short final vowel in English, unlike some pronunciations of Madeline. Parents comparing Madalyn, Madelyn, and Madeleine can decide which written form and pronunciation they prefer without expecting each to have a different etymology. A family tribute may be the strongest reason to preserve one particular spelling among the many related forms.
