Madeleine

Madeleine is the French form of Magdalene, a name identifying a woman from Magdala. Its best-known religious connection is Mary Magdalene. Although the place name is associated with a word for “tower,” “woman from Magdala” is the more direct explanation of the personal name rather than treating Madeleine itself as a word for a building.

Maddie and Maddy are familiar short forms. French and English speakers may use different endings, and the closely related Madeline brings further pronunciation choices. Madeleine keeps a specifically French written form while belonging to a much wider name family. Parents honoring a Magdalene or Magdalena can use it without losing the underlying geographical and religious connection.
