Maizy

Maizy is a spelling of Maisie, the Scottish familiar form of Margaret. Through Margaret, it traces back to a Greek word for pearl. The short form became established enough to stand alone, and Maizy changes its appearance while preserving the familiar English sound.

The spelling may also remind an English reader of maize, the word for corn, but that resemblance is a secondary association rather than the name’s Margaret-family origin. Maizy Russell, the young character in Uncle Buck, provides a recognizable example of this exact form in film. Maisie and Maisy are useful alternatives to compare. A family choosing Maizy can keep the older pearl-related history while preferring its distinctive z spelling.
