Malinda

Malinda is a spelling of Melinda, an English name formed around the familiar Mel- opening and the ending -inda. Melinda has been connected with names such as Melissa and Melanie, but it does not have one securely established ancient translation. Malinda’s own spelling history is therefore clearer than the sometimes repeated phrase “beautiful honey.”

A significant historical bearer is Malinda Russell, whose A Domestic Cook Book was published in 1866. Her work is recognized as the oldest known published cookbook by an African American woman and provides a concrete connection with American culinary history. That namesake gives Malinda a story independent of uncertain word meanings. Linda or Lindy can serve as everyday forms, while the full spelling can preserve a family name or an interest in Russell’s remarkable surviving book.
