Melinda

Melinda was created in the eighteenth century from the familiar opening Mel- and the fashionable ending -inda. Names such as Melissa and Melanie may have contributed to that opening, so the name does not have one securely inherited phrase meaning. Its development belongs to a literary taste for names with a similar flowing shape, including Belinda.

The name also gained a place in Hungarian literature through József Katona’s play Bánk Bán. In modern culture, Melinda appears in television and public life, while Mindy became a familiar short form of its own. Mel and Lindy offer other supported shortenings. Melinda’s story is therefore one of deliberate name creation followed by real literary and everyday use across generations.
