Masiah

Masiah is a modern spelling related to Messiah, a religious title rooted in a Hebrew word meaning anointed. Anointing with oil marked particular sacred roles in biblical tradition, and the title developed a much wider significance in Jewish and Christian belief. Its religious associations are therefore an important part of the name's meaning for many families.

As a given name, Masiah turns that title into an individual personal name and uses a simpler middle spelling than Messiah. The related Arabic title al-Masih also belongs to the religious vocabulary surrounding Jesus, although a family's choice of Masiah does not by itself establish an Arabic derivation. Understanding the title's background can help parents decide how central they want its spiritual meaning to be in their child's name.
