Massiah

Massiah is a spelling of Messiah, a religious title that ultimately comes from the Hebrew word for someone anointed. Anointing with oil marked the appointment of figures such as kings and priests in the ancient biblical world. That practice supplies the literal meaning, while later religious traditions give the title a much wider significance.

Jewish and Christian understandings of the Messiah differ, so a family's intended religious context is part of the name's story. The spelling Massiah keeps the sound and title connection while changing the first vowel on the page. Parents considering it may want to think about that direct religious association alongside any family reason for choosing the name, since the full word remains recognizable in everyday use.
