Mazie

Mazie is a spelling related to Maisie, the familiar Scottish name associated with Margaret through Mairead. That family leads to the Greek word for a pearl. The z makes the usual middle sound especially visible in English, while Mazie’s own history as a recorded given name means it is more than a newly invented spelling.

May is a possible family shortening, though Mazie already has a compact two-syllable form. Maisie, Maisy, and Maizie are the closest comparisons for parents deciding on spelling. Those honoring a Margaret can choose Mazie for a shorter connection, while keeping the pearl meaning separate from the uncertain etymology of Mary, sometimes mixed into accounts of the name.
