Miya

Miya can be a Japanese name associated with the word for a shrine or palace, but a personal name’s exact meaning depends on its original writing. The Roman-letter form can also be chosen as a spelling related to Mia or Maya in other naming traditions. Those uses have separate histories and should not be assigned one universal meaning.

Japanese Olympic swimmer Miya Tachibana is a recognizable bearer. For families considering the name, the intended pronunciation and language background are particularly helpful to explain, since English readers may interpret the vowels in different ways. The short spelling can therefore carry a specific Japanese connection or a personal relationship with another name, depending on how it was chosen.
