Phinehas

Phinehas is a biblical name with a probable Egyptian background, often connected with an ancient name meaning the Nubian. Its ultimate derivation is not fully settled, so that interpretation should be treated as likely rather than certain. The name entered later naming traditions through Hebrew biblical texts, where more than one person bears it.

One Phinehas is the grandson of Aaron and a member of the priestly family; another is a son of Eli in the books of Samuel. Keeping those figures distinct helps when exploring the name's stories. Phineas is a familiar English spelling without the second h, while Pinchas reflects another way of representing the Hebrew form.
