Pinchas

Pinchas is the Hebrew form of the biblical name often written Phinehas in English. Its etymology is uncertain, but a widely discussed explanation connects it with an Egyptian name meaning “the Nubian.” That proposed geographical description is more specific than the broad color-based meaning sometimes given to the name, and it remains a proposal rather than a settled translation.

The best-known biblical Pinchas is the son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron, placing the name within the priestly family in the Torah. Its continued use in Jewish communities also appears in modern namesakes such as violinist Pinchas Zukerman. Pinchos reflects another traditional rendering. For parents considering it, the Hebrew spelling tradition and scriptural history are firmer foundations than any claim of a completely certain ancient meaning.
