Phineas

Phineas is an English form of the biblical name Phinehas. Its early origin is uncertain, although a connection with an Egyptian name meaning “the Nubian” is widely proposed. That explanation refers to a geographical identity, not a requirement concerning the appearance or ancestry of a person given the name today.

Its later associations range from Anthony Trollope’s novel Phineas Finn to the animated series Phineas and Ferb. Those literary and television uses sit alongside the older religious history rather than replacing it. Finn is a possible short form, while Phinehas makes the conventional biblical spelling more visible. Phinnaeus is another written variant, with a more elaborate appearance.
