Raine

Raine can come from a surname connected with the Old French word reine, meaning “queen.” In that route, the royal meaning is a historical nickname behind a surname rather than a title bestowed by the first name. Raine Spencer, the stepmother of Diana, Princess of Wales, is a recognizable bearer.

Modern Raine can also be chosen as a spelling of Rain, with a direct weather association. Those two explanations are distinct, even though they share the same usual English sound. Rayne offers another related spelling. A family’s choice may emphasize the surname history, the natural image, or a relative, and the final e alone cannot identify which meaning was intended.
