Rickey

Rickey is an affectionate form of Richard, a Germanic name combining ideas of rule and bravery or hardness. The familiar ending turns the shorter Rick into a two-syllable name, and Rickey has also been used independently on official records. Its history is therefore rooted in Richard rather than in a separate Norse word for brother.

Baseball player Rickey Henderson is a prominent bearer of this exact spelling, giving the name a recognizable sporting association. Ricky is the closest written alternative, while Richard makes the older family connection explicit. For a child named after a relative, the version that person actually used may matter more than the longest form. Rickey keeps that everyday identity visible while retaining the name family's older meaning.
