Rockwell

Rockwell is an English surname associated with a place name meaning rock spring. The final element refers to a spring or source of water, rather than simply the modern act of doing something well. As a first name, Rockwell preserves that older landscape surname in full.

The name has two notable artistic connections: illustrator Norman Rockwell carried it as a surname, while painter and printmaker Rockwell Kent bore it as a given name. Porter Rockwell supplies another historical association within the Latter Day Saint tradition. Rock and Rocky are natural familiar forms already used as names in their own right. A family might choose Rockwell for its landscape meaning, an artistic namesake, or its place in family history.
