Sholom

Sholom is a form of the Hebrew name Shalom, meaning peace. The different vowel spelling reflects its life in Ashkenazi Jewish naming and pronunciation traditions. Shalom is also a familiar greeting, giving the name an everyday connection with wishing another person peace and well-being.

Its religious and cultural depth comes from the importance of peace in Jewish prayers, blessings, and ordinary speech. Related forms such as Sholem and Shalom show how the same name has been represented in different communities and alphabets. Sholom can therefore preserve the particular form used by a relative rather than simply following the most familiar English spelling. The meaning remains clear, while the chosen form carries a family's own history of how the name sounds and is written.
