Skyler

Skyler is an English-language respelling of Schuyler, a Dutch surname traditionally explained as “scholar.” The modern spelling makes the first syllable resemble the English word sky, but that visual connection is separate from the surname's usual etymology. It is useful to distinguish the sky imagery a family may enjoy from the older name history.

Skylar is the closest familiar spelling alternative, while Schuyler preserves the surname form. Sky is an available short form that foregrounds the modern English association. Skyler has been used for both boys and girls, so neither its er ending nor the related ar spelling determines who can bear it. The spelling choice changes the presentation more than the underlying name family.
