Soleil

Soleil is the French word for the sun, used as a given name. Its meaning is direct, but its pronunciation follows French spelling conventions rather than sounding out every letter as an English reader might. The final letters do not create the same ending heard in words such as foil.

Actress Soleil Moon Frye is a familiar bearer in the United States. Sol is a useful comparison from Spanish and Portuguese, while Sunny offers an English word-name association; neither is simply a spelling variation of Soleil. Keeping the French word intact makes its language and solar connection central to the name’s story.
