Theodor

Theodor is a German and Scandinavian form of the Greek Theodoros, built from the elements for “God” and “gift.” It belongs to the same family as English Theodore but omits the final e. That small written difference is part of an established language tradition rather than a recent decorative spelling.

Children’s author Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, is a familiar bearer of this exact form. The full name offers several shorter possibilities, including Theo, Ted, and Teddy, though families do not have to use a nickname. Pronunciation varies between English, German, and Scandinavian settings, particularly at the opening consonant. Theodor gives a family a way to preserve a specific cultural spelling while keeping a widely recognizable name family.
