Meaning & origin

What does Thorin mean?

Thorin means “Often interpreted as daring; etymology debated”.

Thorin has a history in Old Norse mythology before its appearance in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. A dwarf bearing the name occurs in medieval Norse material; Tolkien later used it for Thorin Oakenshield. The literary association therefore builds on an older naming source, rather than beginning with a newly invented fantasy name.

One explanation connects Thorin with a verb meaning “to dare.” Another links its sound with Thor, although the familiar thunder-god association should not be treated as a certain translation. Thorin offers a longer, two-syllable alternative to Thor while keeping a distinct story. Its strongest modern association is likely to remain Tolkien's dwarf leader.
