Tracy

Tracy entered given-name use through surnames with more than one origin. The Norman route points to French places called Tracy, while an Irish route comes from Ó Treasaigh, identifying a descendant of Treasach. That older Irish personal name is associated with fighting or being warlike. The two surname histories should be kept distinct.

Tracy has been used for boys and girls, with Tracey as a familiar alternative spelling. Actor Spencer Tracy supplies a surname association, while the name has its own established identity as a first name. A family's ancestry may clarify which history matters most. The spelling alone does not justify assigning every Tracy either the Irish meaning or an unrelated connection with ancient Thrace.
