Valkyrie

Valkyrie is the English form of an Old Norse term for the female figures who choose among warriors killed in battle. In Norse mythology, they are associated with Odin and with bringing selected fallen warriors to Valhalla. The name’s meaning comes directly from that role, combining the ideas of the battle-slain and choosing.

A valkyrie is a type of mythological figure rather than one character’s personal name. Individual figures have names of their own, including Brynhildr. Later art, music, and fiction have reimagined them, and Marvel’s Valkyrie provides a familiar modern example. Choosing Valkyrie therefore creates a strong mythological connection, with a literal meaning that is more specific and martial than a general word for strength.
