Viggo

Viggo belongs to a Scandinavian name family built around the old Norse element for battle or war. It developed from shortened forms of longer names containing that element. The Norwegian encyclopedia traces the familiar ending to a medieval Latinized form, giving this compact name a history much older than its modern, energetic sound might suggest.

Actor Viggo Mortensen provides a recognizable connection for many English-speaking families, but the name has its own established place in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The repeated g and open ending give it a distinctive shape among short boys’ names. Wiggo is another recorded spelling, while Viggo is the form most closely associated with the actor.
