Vladimir

Vladimir is a Slavic name combining an element meaning rule with an older element associated with greatness or fame. Later connections with the word mir, meaning peace or world in several Slavic languages, produced other familiar interpretations. Those later associations are part of the name’s history, while great ruler is closer to its earlier structure.

The name has a substantial cultural presence through pianist Vladimir Horowitz, writer Vladimir Nabokov, and a character in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. Volodymyr is the Ukrainian form, and Volodya and Vova are established familiar forms. These relationships show how a formal historical name can have both international literary recognition and intimate everyday versions.
