Willis

Willis comes from a surname derived from Will, a shortened form of William. William’s older Germanic components refer to will or desire and a helmet, commonly interpreted as protection. The surname therefore identifies a relationship with a person called Will, while the familiar “resolute protector” meaning comes through the longer name’s history.

Used as a first name, Willis can preserve a family surname or offer another route to honoring a William. Its final s gives it a different shape from Will and Willie, while Will remains an available short form. The name also has a substantial history in American personal naming, making it a plausible family revival rather than a newly created William variant. Its strongest story joins surname inheritance with the older personal name from which it developed.
