Wilmer

Wilmer is a Germanic name combining elements associated with will or desire and fame. The first part is familiar from William, although Wilmer has its own second element and its own history. The traditional summary “determined fame” captures the two ideas, but it is best understood as a combination of naming elements rather than a prediction about someone’s future.

Actor Wilmer Valderrama is a prominent modern bearer. The name also has a history in English-speaking families that reaches well before contemporary television, and Vilmer is a related Scandinavian spelling. Will and Willie provide familiar short forms. Its ending distinguishes it from William and Wilfred while preserving the recognizable opening shared by several older Germanic names.
