Winnie

Winnie developed as a short form of several names, including Winifred, Edwina, and Gwendolyn, and is also used independently. Because those longer names have different origins, Winnie cannot be assigned one meaning that applies to them all. A family choosing it to honor a Winifred has a different linguistic connection from one choosing it through Edwina or simply for its sound.

Winnie-the-Pooh gives the spelling an enduring storybook association, while Winnie in Tuck Everlasting is short for Winifred. The two-syllable ending keeps it affectionate without requiring a longer official form. Parents deciding between Winnie and Winifred may want to consider whether the longer name adds a family connection they value or whether Winnie itself is the name they actually intend to use.
