Winnifred

Winnifred is a spelling of Winifred with a doubled n, making the familiar short form Winnie especially visible. The name is traditionally associated with Welsh Gwenfrewi and is often explained through ideas of blessing and peace, although its development may also involve influence from the Old English name Winfred. Its history is less certain than a simple “blessed peacemaker” translation suggests.

The best-known traditional figure is Saint Winifred, whose legend is associated with a spring and pilgrimage site at Holywell in Wales. That story helped carry the name into English use. Winnifred keeps this older religious and regional connection while offering several short forms, including Winnie and Freda. For parents considering a family revival, the doubled letter can preserve a relative’s particular spelling of the name.
