Winslow

Winslow comes from an English place-name surname, usually explained as “Wine's hill.” Wine was an Old English personal name connected with friendship, so “friend's hill” is a simplified interpretation rather than a modern English phrase built from wins and low. Painter Winslow Homer gives the name a lasting artistic association.

The name is used for boys and girls, with Win or Winnie available as affectionate forms. Its two syllables and open ending create a gentler sound than Winston, despite their similar beginnings. Winslowe offers a spelling variation, although Winslow preserves the familiar place and surname form. Families who like surnames with a creative association may find it appealing, especially if they enjoy using the complete name as well as its shorter options.
