Xavi

Xavi is a Catalan familiar form of Xavier. The wider name family comes from a Basque place name traditionally interpreted as “new house,” made internationally familiar through Saint Francis Xavier. Xavi preserves that background even when used as the full first name rather than as a nickname.

In Catalan, the opening x has a sh-like sound, which differs from the z-like reading some English speakers might expect. The footballer commonly known as Xavi helped make the short form recognizable beyond Catalan-speaking communities. Basque Xabi is a close related form, while Xavier is the fuller comparison. The alternative meaning “bright” is not the established explanation of this Catalan–Basque name family.
