Zen

Zen is the Japanese name of a Buddhist tradition associated with meditation. The word came through Chinese Chan and ultimately a Sanskrit term for meditation, giving it a religious and linguistic history beyond its casual English use for calmness. As a personal name, Zen therefore carries a more specific cultural association than simply “peaceful.”

Three letters and one syllable make Zen visually and verbally concise. It may appeal to parents considering other spiritual word names, although understanding the tradition is an important part of appreciating its story. The initial z gives it a distinct sound beside gentler short names such as Ren or Lee. Zen works without a nickname, and its brevity leaves plenty of room for a longer middle name or surname.
