Achilles

Achilles is the name of the Greek hero central to the Trojan War tradition. The familiar expression “Achilles’ heel” refers to his vulnerable spot in later stories, not to the literal meaning of his name. The etymology is uncertain, and proposed connections with grief, pain, or glory remain interpretations rather than a settled translation.

Achille is a related form used in several European languages. Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles provides a modern literary retelling focused on Achilles and Patroclus, adding to the name’s long life in literature. Families choosing Achilles are therefore choosing a particularly recognizable story connection, even without a certain dictionary meaning behind it.
