Amiya

Amiya is used in more than one naming tradition. In contemporary English usage it may be a variation of Amia or Amaya. In South Asia, Amiya is also an established masculine personal name, illustrated by the Bengali poet and literary critic Amiya Chakravarty. Those uses should not be collapsed into a single French explanation.

For a family choosing Amiya, the intended connection provides useful context: an Amia-inspired spelling and an Indian family name can share letters while having different histories. The poet’s example gives the South Asian form a specific literary association. Similar-looking Amaya is another comparison, but its own multiple origins do not automatically transfer to every Amiya.
