Artemis

Artemis is the name of the Greek goddess associated with the hunt, wilderness, and protection of young people. She is the twin of Apollo in Greek mythology and later also became closely associated with the moon. The name’s ultimate meaning is uncertain, despite proposed links with words for safety and other concepts.

Ari and Artie offer informal short forms, while Artemisia is a related longer name. Artemis is also used for boys, including the title character of Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl books. Families may choose the name for mythology, literature, or the space program named after the goddess, without needing to select a doubtful literal translation.
