Eris

Eris comes from Greek mythology, where she personifies strife and discord. The meaning is part of the figure's mythological role. It is easy to confuse the spelling with Eros, the Greek god associated with love, but they are distinct figures whose names carry different meanings. The short spellings conceal very different classical stories.

Eris is also the name of a dwarf planet beyond Neptune, chosen for its connection with the goddess. The astronomical body should be described as a dwarf planet rather than simply as the tenth planet. These two associations give the name a classical and scientific background. Its meaning is part of the mythology, not a prediction that a child named Eris will create conflict.
