Faiga

Faiga is a Yiddish name meaning “bird,” belonging to the same family as Feige and Feyge. Its background lies in Ashkenazi Jewish naming traditions, where names drawn from everyday language sit alongside names from Hebrew scripture. The bird meaning gives Faiga a direct connection to the natural world, without needing a particular bird species or an added symbolic translation.

The different spellings reflect ways of representing Yiddish in the Latin alphabet. A family record might therefore show Feige in one place and Faiga in another, even when the intended name is closely related. For parents reviving an ancestor’s name, the spelling used by that relative can be especially meaningful. Faiga preserves a compact piece of Yiddish vocabulary as well as the family and community history attached to it.
