Lennie

Lennie is a familiar short form of Leonard, whose older components combine a word for “lion” with a Germanic element meaning “brave” or “hardy.” It can also be used with other names containing a similar sound, including Eleanor or Helen, so the Leonard meaning belongs to one particular route. The full name behind a family’s Lennie is what determines the inherited meaning.

A major literary association is Lennie Small in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. The story gives the spelling a specific cultural reference, while many families use Lennie simply as an affectionate name or a complete given name. Lenny is a close spelling alternative. Parents can choose the full formal name and nickname together, or use Lennie alone while preserving the family connection in its story.
