Macy

Macy comes through an English surname connected with places in France. The surname is related to forms such as Massey, but one simple translation does not necessarily explain every family line. The frequently repeated meaning “hill” is less certain than the place-name and surname history itself.

Singer Macy Gray and the Macy’s department-store name provide recognizable associations. Maci and Macie are close spelling alternatives, usually with the same sound. Maisie looks and sounds similar but is traditionally connected with Margaret, so it should not automatically be given Macy’s surname origin. That distinction can matter when choosing a name to honor a particular relative.
