Mikel

Mikel is the Basque form of Michael, a name ultimately derived from a Hebrew question meaning who is like God? The question is traditionally understood as affirming that no one is comparable to God. In religious tradition, Michael is an archangel, giving the name family a long history in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic contexts.

Basque Mikel is a complete established form rather than simply an English spelling experiment. Footballer Mikel Arteta is a recognizable bearer. Some English-speaking families also use Mikel with their preferred pronunciation of Michael, so the intended language matters. The Basque form allows a family to honor the broader Michael tradition while choosing a spelling with a distinct regional identity.
