Mikhail

Mikhail is the Russian form of Michael, from a Hebrew name traditionally phrased as the question “Who is like God?” The question expresses divine uniqueness rather than describing the bearer as godlike. Its path through religious and language traditions connects Mikhail with one of the most widely traveled biblical name families.

Dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev are two recognizable bearers. The spelling preserves a specifically Russian form while remaining clearly related to Michael for many English readers. For a family with Russian heritage or a Michael to honor, Mikhail offers a direct linguistic connection, with pronunciation best learned from the family’s own language tradition.
