Mikko

Mikko is a Finnish form of Michael, ultimately from a Hebrew question meaning “who is like God?” The question expresses reverence in its original religious setting. Michael’s place in Jewish and Christian scripture helped the name spread widely, and Finnish developed several forms within that family, including Mikko and Mikael.

The doubled k is characteristic of Mikko’s Finnish spelling and represents a longer consonant than a single k. That small detail is part of the name’s identity, even though English speakers may not reproduce the distinction exactly. Mikko is a complete everyday given name in Finnish, so it can honor a Michael while keeping a specifically Finnish form. It also offers a different rhythm from the English name without losing the older connection shared by both.
