Susannah

Susannah belongs to the name family that begins with Hebrew Shoshannah, traditionally understood as “lily.” The name reached European languages through Greek and Latin forms, producing Susanna, Susan, Suzanne, and other relatives. The final h in Susannah is a spelling choice within that family and does not add a separate meaning.

Its scriptural history includes the story of Susanna, a woman falsely accused by two elders whose dishonesty Daniel exposes. That account appears among the additions to Daniel, with its place in the Bible differing between Christian traditions. The floral meaning also gives Susannah a nature connection independent of that story. Susie and Sue are familiar everyday forms, while the full name retains a link to a long history of biblical translation and personal naming.
