Tommaso

Tommaso is the Italian form of Thomas, whose ancestry reaches back to an Aramaic word meaning twin. Greek and Latin carried the name into Christian tradition before it developed its different European forms. Tommaso's double m is characteristic of the familiar Italian spelling; Tomaso is an established alternative with one m.

The apostle Thomas gave the wider name family its biblical foundation. In Italian history, the philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas is known as Tommaso d'Aquino, adding a scholarly association to the name. Tom and Tommy are straightforward short forms in an English-speaking household, while the full form keeps the Italian connection clear. The literal twin meaning belongs to its linguistic origin and has never restricted the name to children born as twins.
