Youssef

Youssef is a common Latin-letter spelling of the Arabic form of Joseph. The older Hebrew name is traditionally interpreted as “God will add.” The spelling is especially familiar in French-influenced transliteration, but it represents an Arabic name rather than a separate French invention with a new meaning.

The Quranic prophet Yusuf corresponds to the biblical Joseph, with a story associated with dreams, family conflict, and eventual recognition. Yusuf and Yousef are close spelling comparisons, while Joseph is the familiar English form. A family’s preferred transliteration may preserve regional or inherited conventions. Those spelling differences should not be mistaken for different name roots or used to assign a separate meaning to each form.
